LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IS IMPORTANT

Landscape architecture is of great importance in the sustainability of our environment and the health of its inhabitants. Plants and animals are protected and encouraged to thrive in diversely designed habitations and green environments. Humans also benefit from tree planting and landscaping by the environment's abilities to clean the air, filter the carbon dioxide, catch the dust, shade from radiation, dilution of stormwater, beautification of the environment and best of all the cooling of our climate.

Here are 3 of the best reasons why landscape architecture is so important.

1. RESTORATION OF LANDSCAPES & CREATION OF HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS

BEFORE

The Cheonggyecheon River restoration in Seoul, South Korea, is a perfect example of landscape architecture and urban design working to reduce the environmental impact busy cities make on the landscape and their inhabitants. The river, once unused and polluted and located under 14 lanes of freeway through the busy capital city of South Korea, now provides so much more for the health and lifestyle of its occupants. The restoration has created a green corridor offering an aesthetic pathway following the river with an avenue of trees lining its banks. Not only has it beautified the city but it hosts entertainment and places for exercise and meditation and of course provides homes for all kinds of animals.

2. COOLING SUBURBIA

Find below some interesting articles about grey and green suburbs and how a lack of trees exacerbates extreme heat effects. Without enough trees shading city streets, temperatures can be as much as 10C hotter making some suburbs impossible to live in. One of the main reasons you'll find this heat disparity is due to of all things homeowners knocking down trees to put a pool in to make their homes cooler. Landscape architecture can encourage more planting through landsape design when designing for new developments and restoration of old ones.

NO.004 // MONDAY 07 DEC 2020 // THE GREEN PLAN: THE UK 'S 10 POINT PLAN TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT

UK'S 10 POINT ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN:

THE GREEN INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

It made our day this morning when the UK government announced this fantastic news. We hope that Australia follows suit.

Here are the 10 initiatives which make up the UK's Green Industrial Revolution.

1. A ban on combustion engine sales by 2030, with grants for electric cars, and funding for charge points. The sale of some hybrid cars and vans will continue until 2035.

2. A previously announced pledge to quadruple offshore wind power by 2030, to 40GW, enough to power every UK home.

3. Moves to boost hydrogen production, with the promise of a town heated entirely by hydrogen by the end of the decade.

4. Investment of £525m towards new nuclear power, based on “the next generation of small and advanced reactors ”.

5. £1bn next year for funds to insulate homes and public buildings, using the existing green homes grant and public sector decarbonisation scheme.

6. An extra £200m invested in carbon capture initiatives .

7. Support for greener energies in the aviation and maritime sectors, with £20m committed to the latter.

8. 30,000 hectares of trees planted every year, as part of nature conservation efforts.

9. Moves to promote public transport, cycling and walking, although no new schemes were announced.

10. A pledge to make London “the global centre of green finance”.

FARMS OF THE FUTURE

Urban is the word that sits alongside farms of the future. Whether it be an apartment's small balcony or the whole rooftop of a university's largest faculty, spaces not normally connected to farming are now becoming urban oases of the production of organic fruits and vegetables and even beekeeping. Here are some great examples from around the world.

On top of the six-acre rooftop of the Vancouver Convention Centre sits a surprising piece of land dispersed with Canadian native plants. The plot also houses bees and their hives with the centre's catering facilities enjoying being able to use this locally produced honey on their menus.
